Energy-efficient transport construction
Länsimetro is Finland's largest infrastructure project. After its completion, the metro line will serve over 100,000 passengers a day. Granlund is responsible for the HVAC design of all eight metro stations. All stations will be built underground and there are in all 14 kilometres of tunnels.
Building services design aims at ensuring safe conditions even 30 metres underground. The solutions include exceptionally long ventilation ducts, frequency converter-controlled smoke ventilation and replacement air systems, as well as over-pressurised fans. Energy efficiency is ensured with, for example, heat recovery and appropriate ventilation control. Back-up power machines are cooled with water from basic water table.
3D and building information (BIM) modelling have been used in designing Länsimetro. A combination model will also be generated for the whole project, information provided thereby will be later utilised in the service and maintenance of the Länsimetro.
The design takes into account possible changes, since the building engineering and architects' contract calculation plans will be finalised after the completion of building services design. Moreover, land use planning above ground will proceed simultaneously with construction.
